Is Life Existing Somewhere Else Besides Earth?

Since early times, people have beenfascinated with the idea of life existing somewhere else besides earth. Untilrecently, scientists believed that life on other planets was just a hopefuldream. But now they are beginning to locate places where life could form.

In 1997, they saw evidence of planets nearother stars like the sun. But scientists now think that life could be evennearer in our own solar system. One place scientists are studying very closelyis Europa, a moon of Jupiter.

Space probes have provided evidence thatEuropa has a large ocean under its surface. The probes have also madescientists think that under its surface Europa has a rocky core giving offvolcanic heat. Water and heat from volcanic activity are two basic conditionsneeded for life to form.

A third is certain basic chemicals such ascarbon, oxygen and nitrogen. Scientists believe there might be such chemicalslie at the bottom of Europa"s ocean. They may have already created life or maybe about to. You may wonder if light is also needed for life to form. Untilrecently, scientists thought that light was essential.

But now, places have been found on earththat are in total blackness such as caves several miles beneath the surface. And bacteria, primitive forms of life have been seen there. So the lack oflight in Europa"s sub-surface ocean doesn"t automatically rule out lifeforming.

Old Staff are More Popular

Older staff are more productive than their younger colleagues, say researchers. More mature members of staff may be weaker and less agile than their junior counterparts, but they more than compensate with their greater experience, ability to work in teams, and success at coping when things go wrong. The researchers say: While older workers make more errors, perhaps due to declining physical attributes, they hardly make any severe errors, perhaps due to more experience. It is experience that prevents severe errors.

The scientists who studied production lines at a Mercedes-Benz truck factory in southern Germany also found that younger, more highly educated workers were less productive than those who had fewer qualifications — perhaps because the educated workers got bored more easily. The researchers, from the University of Mannheim, said their findings debunked the idea that older workers should be made redundant to boost productivity.

.Problem of Global Warming

Global warming may or not be the great environmental crisisof the 21st century, but—regardless of weather it is or isn"t— we won"t do muchabout it. We will argue over it and mayeven, as a nation, make some fairlysolemn-sounding commitments to avoid it. But the moredramatic and meaningful thesecommitments seem, the less likely they are to be observed.

Al Gore calls global warming an “inconvenient truth,”as if merely recognizing it could put inon a path to a solution. But the realtruth is that we don"t know enough to believe globalwarming, and — withourmajor technological breakthroughs — we can"t do much about it.

No government will adopt rigid restrictions oneconomic growth and personal freedom (limits onelectricity usage, driving andtravel)that might cut back global warming. Still, politicians want toshow they"re “doing something”. Consider the KyotoProtocol. It allowed countries that joined topunish those that didn"t. But ithasn"t reduced carbon dioxide emissions (up about 25% since1990), and many signatoriesdidn"t adopt tough enough policies to hit their 2008 — 2012targets.

The practical conclusion is that if global warming is apotentail disaster, the only solution isnew technology. Only an aggressiveresearch and development program might find ways ofbreaking our dependence onfossil fuels or dealing with it.

The trouble with the global warming debate is that it hasbecome a moral problem when it"sreally engineering one. The inconvenient truthis that if we don"t solve the engineeringproblem, we"re helpless.
